Bernhard Grzimek was mentor of the German conservation movement: among others, he was founder of the BUND, president of the DNR and first conservation delegate of the German Government. Not only did he care about Africa´s wildlife, he also propagated action at home. From the very beginning, FZS supported projects in Germany and other European countries.
Europe is a difficult area for conservation. For many millennia, civilization has been interfering which has led to changes in ecosystems. This resulted in more or less diverse ecosystems.
However, there are still wild areas - especially in Central and Eastern Europe - that are worth being protected. Primarily, FZS' support focuses on the conservation of these last wild habitats. Another aim is to restore semi-natural conditions in areas where this seems still possible. Also, diverse habitats created by humans and certain species driven close to extinction are to be protected.
