Die Naturschutzbotschafter sind eine Gruppe von momentan ca.40 Ehrenamtlichen, die die Zoobesucher über bedrohte Tierarten und ihre Lebensräume informieren und auf Naturschutzprojekte der ZGF aufmerksam machen.

The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) is an internationally operating conservation
organisation based in Germany and has been supporting long-term conservation
projects in Africa, Central and South America, South East Asia and Europe for
many decades. Following its mission to conserve wildlife and ecosystems focusing
on protected areas and outstanding wild places, FZS concentrates its work on:
- Strengthening protected area operation in key ecosystems
- Capacity building for effective ecosystem management
- Development of policies, plans and awareness to support protected areas
- Development of monitoring to increase the understanding of ecosystem processes
- Involvement of local communities in the management and sustainable use of natural resources
The FZS South America & SE Asia Department is seeking a Project Officer for protected area management in Guyana at the soonest possible date.
The Co-operative Republic of Guyana harbours outstanding natural landscapes and rich biodiversity. With the recent establishment of the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) and the creation of new protected areas, the country has made a major step towards the effective conservation of its unique and globally important natural heritage. FZS’ objective is to support this process and, in particular, assist in the effective management of the newly established Kanuku Mountain Protected Area in southern Guyana.
Under the supervision of the FZS South America & SE Asia Department and working alongside the PAC team in Guyana, you will be responsible for:
- Giving technical advice and assistance to the PAC team in order to assist in the further
development of the institution
- Supporting the PAC in planning and implementing effective management measures in the
Kanuku Mountains Protected Area , with particular focus on law enforcement (training,
infrastructure, equipment) and wildlife and landscape monitoring
- Working with the PAC to maintain close cooperation and agreement with indigenous
communities, Community Representative Groups, national NGO partners, and other key
stakeholders.
Requirements:
- A postgraduate degree in biological or environmental science, preferably in the field of
conservation, natural resource or ecosystem management
- At least 5 years of work experience in management or governance positions in Central or South America related to protected area and wildlife management as well as to sustainable use of natural resources
- Fluency in English, oral and written
- Experience and understanding of field-based activities is essential
- Strong communication skills with local communities, particular in the South American context
- Excellent communication and good team building skills
- Proven technical, organizational and strong project management skills
The position offers a two-year contract; however, potential candidates should ideally be considering a longer-term commitment. A quarterly salary will be paid according to candidate qualifications.

Die ZGF bietet leider nur sehr eingeschränkte Möglichkeiten als Praktikant/ Praktikantin mitzuarbeiten; im Wesentlichen beschränkt auf die Geschäftsstelle in Frankfurt.
Sehr häufig erreichen uns Fragen bezüglich einer freiwilligen Mitarbeit in der Serengeti oder im Orang-Utan-Projekt auf Sumatra. Leider gibt es hier keine Möglichkeit eines Praktikums. Wir wissen das Engagement der zahlreichen Menschen, die uns ihre Mitarbeit anbieten sehr zu schätzen. Jedoch fehlen uns in den Projekten die Kapazitäten, Praktikanten einen entsprechenden Rahmen bieten zu können. Die Projekte befinden sich in der Regel in sehr abgelegenen Gebieten, wo Unterkunft und vor allem Transport für zusätzliche Personen ein erhebliches logistisches Problem darstellen.
