Serengeti Trust Fund
OBJECTIVE

The development goal of the project is to contribute to the sustainable growth of Tanzania by reducing the costs of biodiversity management borne by rural communities adjacent to the Serengeti Ecosystem and improving equitability of access to the benefits.

The environmental goal of the project is to secure the long-term biodiversity and related national and international environmental services of the Serengeti Ecosystem and by so doing strengthen Tanzania’s protected area system more broadly.

BACKGROUND

The aim of this project is the development and strengthening of conservation finance and benefit sharing mechanisms that support long-term biodiversity conservation and human livelihood goals in the Serengeti Ecosystem. The project will contribute to the provision of lasting and wide-ranging biodiversity conservation and human livelihood benefits in the Serengeti Ecosystem, as well as in other globally important natural ecosystems. The Serengeti Trust Fund will be a fully operational mechanism for reducing costs for local communities associated with living in the Serengeti Ecosystem and as a forum for stakeholder co-operation in the management of the Serengeti Ecosystem.

The purpose of the project is to see that Conservation finance and benefit sharing mechanisms that support long-term biodiversity conservation and human livelihood goals in the Serengeti Ecosystem developed and strengthened. Further, lessons learnt from this project should be used to improve the financial sustainability of other protected areas in the region.
