Frankfurt Zoological Society receives the first ever KfW Bernhard-Grzimek Award
During a ceremony at Frankfurt’s Palmengarten last night (10 April), Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) was presented with the KfW Bernhard Grzimek Award. FZS is the first ever recipient of this new award which, from now on, will be awarded every two years to honour individuals and organizations for their commitment to saving the world’s biodiversity. In presenting the award to FZS, KfW recognizes FZS’ long-term commitment to practical conservation of globally significant biodiversity and wilderness areas.

Governments and oil companies slammed over Virunga exploration
The committee overseeing World Heritage Sites yesterday cautioned that petroleum exploration in Virunga National Park could cause serious harm and should be halted. WWF, the Wildlife Conservation Society, Fauna & Flora International, the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the Lukuru Foundation welcome this strong position and urge the DRC government and oil companies to act on it.

No Oil Exploration in Virunga !
From June 24th till July 6th, the World Heritage Committee and State Parties will be gathering in St Petersburg for the 36th session of the World Heritage Committee. The conservation status of our most precious places on earth will be discussed and decisions will be made to safeguard those places for future generations. In a joint position paper of 7 NGOs we urge the DRC Government to ensure that the provisions of the World Heritage Convention are upheld, and to explore alternative development models for Virunga area which do not rely on oil exploration and development inside the current boundaries of Virunga National Park.

Serengeti needs a Southern Road Alignment fast
Serengeti is a major focus of the Bilateral Agreement between Germany and Tanzania. To secure the National Park in the long run, the donors need to push for an alternative alignment now. The press release of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), published on the 27th of April on the future co-operation between the two countries, shows the strong commitment of both sides to safeguard the Serengeti as a World Heritage Site and international icon of conservation.

A new species of ferret-badger from Vietnam
Ferret-badgers are distributed in the Indochinese region, Java, Bali and NE-Borneo. There are currently four species described, each having very similar phenotypes, meaning they are very similar in coloration and size. German researchers and conservationists now discovered and described a species new to science.

FZS welcomes today’s announcement by Germany’s Federal Minister for Development Dirk Niebel to support Tanzanian alternative planning
Last Wednesday the Tanzanian government officially declared they would not pursue construction plans for a tarmac road through the Serengeti National Park. In a press release issued today Germany’s Federal Minister for Development Dirk Niebel not only acknowledged Tanzanian's announcement, but also commissioned the federal bank KfW to conduct a study on alternative infrastructure developments in the Loliondo area.

Smuggled cheetahs released into the wild
The big cats were seized at a house in Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital, where they were being held in cramped cages barely high enough for the animals to stand. Conservationists from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) worked with the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) and the Tanzania Wildlife Division to urgently secure the release of the cheetahs.
